The 1109th AVCRAD in Groton, Connecticut, refurbishes and maintains U.S. Army rotary wing aircraft, utilizing skilled mechanics and civilian contractors. It performs high-level sustainment maintenance, capable of overhauling helicopters like the UH-60 Blackhawk and CH-47 Chinook.

In 2019, it repaired two severely damaged CH-47 helicopters, saving the Department of Defense millions. The facility holds ISO 9000:2015 and AS 9110 certifications, allowing it to bid on aviation maintenance projects and provide technical training to personnel. The AVCRAD is also home to the 1109th Theater Aviation Support Maintenance Group, which supports aircraft maintenance globally.
