£20m Investment Enhances Norfolk Broads Flood Defenses
The Norfolk Broads are set to benefit from a £20 million upgrade to flood defenses, enhancing protection for over 700 properties. The project focuses on upgrading 11 pumping stations in the Upper Thurne catchment, increasing water discharge capacity by 50% to mitigate risks from flooding and adapt to climate change.

The £20 million upgrade to flood defenses in the Norfolk Broads targets eleven pumping stations in the Upper Thurne catchment. This initiative aims to protect over 700 properties across 15,500 acres, addressing risks from storm surges and extreme rainfall.
New technology will enhance pump efficiency, with capacity increased by 50%. Each upgraded station will cost approximately £3.5 million, with ambitions to eventually replace all 37 stations in the Broads.
The funding is part of a wider £1.4 billion investment for flood protection across the UK, including projects in Poole Harbour and Cumbria. Improved management of water levels will also benefit sensitive habitats facing pressures from climate change.
