The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is exploring the use of harbor sediment for 3D printing dome structures in Mobile Bay, Alabama. These printed domes are designed to create habitats for oyster larvae, reduce wave energy, and help combat coastal erosion.
Researchers from the Engineer Research and Development Center have developed a printable mixture from sediment sourced from the Blakeley Island deposit. Initial installations have shown successful colonization by barnacles and oysters.
Future phases will compare pure sediment domes with those incorporating oyster shells, focusing on durability and colonization rates. The scalability of this method will depend on long-term stability and environmental compatibility.
