40th Anniversary of Lesotho Highlands Water Project Launched by LHDA Chief Executive
The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) celebrates 40 years of operation, marking a significant milestone in regional cooperation between Lesotho and South Africa. The anniversary launch emphasizes the project's achievements and ongoing Phase II developments, including the construction of the Polihali Dam and associated infrastructure.

In March 2026, the LHDA Chief Executive launched the 40th Anniversary of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). This event commemorates a pivotal milestone in the binational collaboration between Lesotho and South Africa.
Phase I delivered key infrastructure, including the Katse Dam and 'Muela Hydropower Station, establishing a foundation for Phase II, which involves the Polihali Dam and extensive new infrastructure. Over 40 years, the LHWP has demonstrated significant socioeconomic benefits, supported by a framework of strong governance and community partnerships.
The project continues to address shared water challenges and enhance regional cooperation. The LHDA calls for stakeholder engagement to reflect on the past and plan for future developments.
