$566 Million Pentagon Loan for Australian Scandium Mine
A $566 million loan from the Pentagon will support a rare earths mine in Australia, aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese and Russian sources of scandium. This project is expected to significantly increase the Western supply of this critical mineral.

The Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital is providing a $566 million loan to Sunrise Energy Metals for a scandium mine in Fifield, New South Wales. This investment is intended to enhance supply chain resilience for critical minerals, specifically targeting a reduction in dependence on sources from China, Russia, and Ukraine.
The mine is projected to more than triple current Western scandium supply, crucial for applications in aerospace. This initiative may shift dynamics in the global minerals market, particularly regarding geopolitical supply chains.
