ABB Expands AI Infrastructure Orders Amid Thyssenkrupp Manufacturing Shutdowns in Europe
The European industrial landscape is diverging, with ABB securing multi-million euro orders for AI infrastructure while Thyssenkrupp halts production at its Isbergues plant due to market pressures. ABB's partnership with VoltaGrid will supply additional synchronous condensers, crucial for AI data centers, while Thyssenkrupp's electrical steel production faces significant challenges from rising imports. Hochtief successfully expands its project portfolio with a 200 million euro partnership for student housing, showcasing strength in construction.

ABB has expanded its partnership with VoltaGrid to supply 35 synchronous condensers and prefabricated eHouse units for global power generation, with orders booked for Q2 2026. This technology is essential for stabilizing electrical grids for AI data centers, which are projected to drive significant electricity demand by 2030.
In contrast, Thyssenkrupp will halt production at its Isbergues plant from June to September due to a flood of imports, affecting 600 employees. The company has issued a loss warning of up to 800 million euros for the 2025/26 fiscal year. Meanwhile, Hochtief secured a 200 million euro project for the University of Southampton, reflecting robust growth in construction despite challenges in other sectors.
