ORNL Develops Compact Gallium Nitride Power Converters
Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed a power converter utilizing gallium nitride semiconductors, enhancing efficiency and reducing size and costs. This innovation is critical for meeting the energy demands of data centers and other large-scale applications.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has created a high-efficiency power converter using gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors, which switch 10 to 20 times faster than traditional silicon semiconductors. The new converters, developed at the Grid Research Innovation and Development Center (GRID-C), offer a compact design that reduces delivery, installation, and maintenance costs.
This technology responds to the increasing demand in the energy sector for efficient, space-saving solutions, particularly for applications in artificial intelligence data centers that require multiple units per server. The advancements in GaN technology may lead to significant shifts in power management across various industries.
