ABB Invests $45M in Brazil's Data Center Infrastructure Amid Regulatory Challenges
ABB is investing $45 million in Brazil to expand its data center operations and enhance portfolio capabilities. Despite a 9% growth in 2022 due to rising electrification needs, regulatory delays may hinder future investments.
ABB plans a $45 million investment in Brazil focused on data centers and operational improvements at its Sorocaba facility. The Brazilian market is critical for ABB, which ranks among its top 10 global markets, with the electrification unit accounting for half of its revenue.
Currently, Brazil hosts 206 data centers, primarily in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Porto Alegre. However, regulatory delays, particularly concerning the Special Tax Regime for Data Center Services, may impede future investment momentum.
The lack of sufficient transmission infrastructure poses another significant risk, as existing lines are inadequate for current energy production levels. ABB views upcoming energy storage auctions as a potential growth opportunity, while projections indicate that electric vehicle adoption will continue to rise, further increasing demand for charging infrastructure.
