Advancing Maritime Decarbonisation through Battery Technology
Maritime industry is increasingly focusing on batteries as a key technology in decarbonisation efforts. Jan-Erik Räsänen of Foreship emphasizes that integrating batteries can enhance operational efficiency and support emissions reduction goals set by regulations.

Jan-Erik Räsänen, CTO of Foreship, highlights the role of batteries in achieving maritime decarbonisation. With approximately 1,900 MWh of installed battery capacity in the global fleet, Räsänen acknowledges the evolution of his views on battery viability for ships.
He promotes a strategy of electrifying systems where possible to optimize engine performance, thereby improving efficiency. While he supports the use of alternative fuels like bio-methanol and e-fuels, he expresses caution regarding ammonia due to safety issues and raises concerns about methane slip associated with LNG. Räsänen advocates for a diverse technological approach to meet emissions mandates from the IMO and other bodies.
