The Aeroporto Intercontinentale del Mediterraneo project aims to establish a major airport for cargo and passengers in Sicily, with a proposed investment exceeding €1.6 billion. Technical documentation has been submitted to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to initiate the project finance process, with a target for the first flight in two and a half years. However, regulatory approvals are essential, and local authorities express concerns about the project's economic sustainability amidst existing airport infrastructure.

The Aeroporto Intercontinentale del Mediterraneo project intends to create a significant cargo and passenger airport in Sicily, with total investment projected at over €1.6 billion. The CEO of La Sciara Holding, Fabio Bertolotti, announced that the formal documentation has been submitted to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, aiming for the first flight in two and a half years.
The investment includes €1.2 billion for airport infrastructure and €450 million for a photovoltaic system. The project will require approvals from ENAC, ENAV, and environmental assessments. Local officials have expressed skepticism about the necessity of a new airport given the existing facilities in Sicily.
