AfDB Approves $150 Million Loan for Mozambique's Floating Solar Project
The African Development Bank has sanctioned a $150 million loan for a 100 MW floating solar initiative in Mozambique. This project, intended for completion by 2028, aims to integrate solar energy with existing hydroelectric capacity, marking a significant step towards hybrid energy models in Africa.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a loan of $150 million for Mozambique's floating solar project on Cahora Bassa Lake, which will deliver 100 MW of solar capacity. Expected to start construction in Q3 2026 and achieve full operation by late 2028, the project will be managed by Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and has a potential expansion to 200 MW.
This initiative, backed by the AfDB, Green Climate Fund, World Bank, and European Union, aims to create a hybrid energy model that combines solar generation with hydropower. The project will also serve as a demonstration for future hybrid developments across Africa.
