African Nations Pursue Fossil Fuel Development Amid Climate Concerns
African countries are prioritizing fossil fuel resource development to address energy shortages and stimulate economic growth. This approach raises concerns about potential increases in emissions, although the actual impact will vary by region due to differing energy mixes.

At the recent United Nations climate summit, African nations emphasized the importance of developing fossil fuel resources to combat fuel shortages and promote economic growth. Since 2017, Africa's electricity consumption growth has closely followed Asia, with key players like Egypt and South Africa leading the charge.
South Africa primarily relies on coal, producing nearly 90% of its 224.63 TWh electricity from this source, while Egypt utilizes natural gas for 77% of its 174.88 TWh supply, resulting in stark differences in emissions levels. The continent's energy landscape is also evolving, with hydropower expanding significantly and countries like Nigeria increasing gas production. The shift from coal to natural gas may mitigate emissions increases, provided that infrastructure developments support cleaner energy transitions.
