Africa's Maritime Future at Risk Without Port Modernization, PMAWCA Warns
African nations must modernize port infrastructure to maintain competitiveness in global maritime trade. Investment in technology and deep sea facilities is critical for economic growth and efficiency in shipping operations.

Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, President of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) and Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, emphasized the urgent need for African countries to invest in modern port infrastructure.
He highlighted that Nigeria, which accounts for over 70% of cargo traffic in the region, is refurbishing its Apapa and Tin Can Island ports while also developing new deep sea ports to handle larger vessels. Dantsoho pointed to significant modernization efforts in nations such as Ghana, Senegal, and Côte d'Ivoire, noting that technology, automation, and digital systems are essential for operational efficiency. He warned that without substantial investments, Africa risks losing its maritime relevance on the global stage.
