AI Robot Teacher IRIS Launched in Karnataka Government School
The Vandse Government Higher Primary School in Karnataka has introduced an AI robot teacher, IRIS, aiming to enhance educational engagement. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize teaching methods and increase student enrollment amidst previous challenges.

The Vandse Government Higher Primary School, a historic institution in Karnataka, has implemented the AI robot teacher IRIS, developed by MakersLab Edutech under NITI Aayog's Atal Tinkering Lab initiative. The robot, which costs around Rs. 3.5 lakh, is designed to support rather than replace human teachers and can interact in over 20 languages.
The introduction follows significant investment from the Sri Mookambika Charitable Trust, totaling nearly Rs. 3 crore, aimed at upgrading school infrastructure, which now includes smart boards and a solar power system. As the school transitions to English medium instruction, authorities expect an uptick in student enrollment, with early indications of increased inquiries.
