Air Force Introduces AEW 2.0 Deployment Model, Phasing Out Deployable Combat Wings

DEFENSE

The Air Force is revising its deployment model with the introduction of AEW 2.0, replacing the plans for deployable combat wings (DCWs). The new model will form approximately 18 months prior to deployment, allowing components to train and certify as a cohesive unit.

The AEW 2.0 will retain the objectives of DCWs but will involve significantly fewer unit type codes (UTCs) and will be based on a core UTC structure. The model aims to minimize personnel and equipment complexities while promoting unit cohesion.

AEW 2.0 will be implemented in fiscal year 2027, starting October 1. This change is part of a broader re-optimization effort by the Air Force, which includes revisions to previous initiatives like Integrated Capabilities Command and the renaming of Air Education and Training Command. The Air Force aims to preserve readiness and homeland defense capabilities while adapting to new leadership perspectives.
