Air Force Investigates Digital HF for Future ICBM Sentinel as EMD Decision Approaches
The Air Force is assessing digital high frequency for the Sentinel ICBM, with an EMD re-certification decision pending by year's end. The Sentinel is scheduled for deployment in 2033 as a replacement for the Minuteman III.

The Air Force Global Strike Command is evaluating digital high frequency (DHF) systems for the LGM-35A Sentinel ICBM developed by Northrop Grumman. A decision regarding the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) re-certification is expected by the end of 2026.
Sentinel is slated for deployment in 2033, intended to succeed the Minuteman III. Integration of DHF for the Sentinel nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3) could occur from 2031 to 2033, contingent on technological advancements. The outcome of the EMD decision could significantly influence the modernization of U.S. nuclear capabilities.
