Air Force Proposes Reactivation of Wind Tunnel at NASA's Ohio Facility for Hypersonic Testing
DEFENSE
The Air Force plans to revive a dormant wind tunnel at NASA's Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio, for hypersonic system testing. The facility can simulate conditions for hypersonic vehicles and engines at speeds up to Mach 7 and altitudes of 120,000 feet.
The reactivation process is projected to take 18 to 24 months, with contractor responses due by March 19. The wind tunnel, which has been inactive since 2007, is deemed viable for addressing a critical testing gap. The Pentagon supports the development of scramjet technologies essential for hypersonic flight.
