Airbus Projects 3.6% Growth in Global Air Travel, Seeks 43,400 New Aircraft Deliveries
Long-term projections indicate an annual growth rate of 3.6% in passenger traffic, necessitating 43,400 new aircraft deliveries over 20 years. The demand is driven by economic growth, urbanization, and the expansion of the global middle class.

Airbus forecasts a need for approximately 43,400 new passenger and freighter aircraft deliveries within the next 20 years, with a significant portion (44%) intended to replace older, less efficient aircraft. The global aviation market anticipates a doubling of the in-service fleet to over 49,000 aircraft by 2044, creating jobs in pilot training, maintenance, and support services.
Notably, Airbus holds nearly 40% of the civil and parapublic helicopter market. Its commercial backlog as of May 31, 2026, stands at 9,247 aircraft, showcasing demand for single-aisle models, primarily the A320neo family. The trend towards sustainable aerospace innovations, including hydrogen technology, is crucial for Airbus to maintain its market leadership.
