Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Testing Phase Set for September 2023
Türkiye's first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, is on track to commence its testing phase in September 2023, following the resolution of financing issues. The facility, constructed by Rosatom, will feature four units with a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts.

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant, under construction in Mersin, Türkiye, is slated to begin its testing phase in September 2023. This phase will involve loading fuel rods into the reactor under the supervision of a specialized Russian team, followed by a nine-month trial for electricity generation.
Originally, the first unit was expected to be operational by October 29, 2023, but delays due to financing challenges and the Russia-Ukraine war have pushed this date to October 29, 2024. Funding for the project is being facilitated through a clearing mechanism associated with natural gas payments between Türkiye and Russia. Successful completion of the testing phase may mitigate prior delays and enhance energy security in the region.
