Alaska Projects 3,000 New Jobs by 2026, Driven by Oil, Gas, and Health Care Sectors

DEFENSENATURAL GAS

Alaska is projected to gain 3,000 jobs in 2026, primarily in oil and gas, health care, and construction. The Alaska Department of Labor anticipates that development of the Santos-owned Pikka oil field and ConocoPhillips' Willow project will create 1,000 new oil and gas jobs this year.

Health care is expected to add 1,100 jobs statewide, while government sectors are likely to lose jobs, with an estimated loss of 300 federal positions in 2025. The Fairbanks North Star Borough is expected to see job growth of less than 1%.

Military employment is projected to increase, with Fort Wainwright adding up to 500 soldiers and Eielson Air Force Base gaining 220 Air National Guardsmen. Despite potential job growth, challenges remain, including declining public school enrollment and a reliance on out-of-state workers. The Alaska LNG project and other developments face procedural hurdles despite federal support.
