Alpha Design Technologies Completes Upgrade of Indian Air Force's Pechora Missile System

DEFENSE

Alpha Design Technologies Ltd (ADTL) has completed a significant upgrade of the Indian Air Force's Pechora surface-to-air missile system, enhancing its capabilities as part of India's military modernization efforts. The upgraded system is fully digitized and is expected to bolster India's air defense, playing a crucial role in the Sudarshan Chakra project, which aims to create a comprehensive air defense shield.

Originally introduced in the 1970s, the Pechora system has been vital to India's defense but faced challenges due to technological advancements. The IAF's upgrade program, initiated to extend the system's service life and combat effectiveness, saw ADTL as the strategic partner, following a Rs 591.3 crore contract signed in September 2020.

User trials for the upgraded system were successfully conducted at the Pokhran range from November 6 to December 26, 2025, confirming its operational readiness. This upgrade positions ADTL as the first Indian company to modernize a Russian-origin missile system.
