Amarillo Considers Water Rate Increase for New Treatment Plant Funding
Amarillo's City Council is exploring a potential water rate increase to support a new $1.5 billion wastewater treatment facility. A comprehensive rate study will commence in June to align revenues with expenses and accommodate future water supply costs from CRMWA.

The Amarillo City Council is assessing a water and wastewater rate study that may necessitate an increase in water rates to finance a new wastewater treatment plant estimated at $1.5 billion. Preliminary findings indicate that annual debt service could rise by 238% by 2036, with utility expenses projected to reach $257.2 million by fiscal year 2036, while revenues may only be $129.5 million, creating a shortfall of $127.7 million.
A gradual rate adjustment of 8.37% is recommended to meet these financial demands. The city also plans to increase capital project funding to $1.8 billion over the next decade, driven by growing demand due to developments like Fermi America and anticipated water supply costs from CRMWA starting in 2027. The study will continue, with further updates expected from NewGen Strategies.
