American Airlines Completes First U.S. Passenger Flight Using Waste Carbon-Based Fuel
American Airlines has successfully operated the first U.S. passenger flight using electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) derived from waste carbon dioxide and renewable electricity. This milestone demonstrates the potential for integrating synthetic fuels into existing aviation infrastructure, a critical step towards reducing emissions in the aviation sector.

American Airlines has conducted the inaugural U.S. commercial passenger flight powered by eSAF from Infinium's facility in Corpus Christi. The fuel, made from waste carbon and renewable energy, passed ASTM specifications, allowing it to be blended with conventional jet fuel without infrastructure modifications.
The flight underscores the feasibility of integrating synthetic fuels into the current aviation fuel network. Infinium's Project Roadrunner aims to produce over 5 million gallons of eSAF annually starting in 2027, addressing the demand for sustainable aviation fuels, which currently represent less than 1% of global aviation fuel use. The successful implementation of eSAF could reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by over 90%, presenting a significant opportunity for emissions reduction in aviation.
