Andalucía Invests €220 Million in Nuclear Fusion Projects with Ifmif-Dones and Tokamak Smart
The Junta de Andalucía is investing €219.95 million in two nuclear fusion projects: the Ifmif-Dones particle accelerator and the Tokamak Smart reactor, aiming to position the region as a leader in clean energy. The Ifmif-Dones project will receive €211.95 million to test materials for future fusion plants, while the Tokamak Smart will receive €8 million to develop a spherical reactor for controlled fusion. These initiatives are expected to boost the local economy and attract research talent over the coming decades.

The Junta de Andalucía is investing €219.95 million in two nuclear fusion projects: the Ifmif-Dones particle accelerator in Escúzar and the Tokamak Smart reactor at the University of Seville. The funding, primarily from the Feder Andalucía 2021-2027 program, aims to establish Andalucía as a global leader in nuclear fusion, generating clean energy, knowledge, and job opportunities.
The Ifmif-Dones accelerator will receive €211.95 million and is designed to test materials for future fusion power plants, with a projected timeline of 30 years, including a 10-year construction phase. The operational phase is planned from 2035 to 2055.
The Tokamak project will receive €8 million and aims to create a spherical Tokamak for controlled nuclear fusion, capable of providing energy for Seville. Both projects are expected to significantly impact the local economy and attract research talent.
