Annual MAFFS Training Scheduled in Northern California
From April 20-24, 2026, the USDA Forest Service and CAL FIRE will conduct Modular Airborne Firefighting Systems training in Sacramento, California. This training is crucial for enhancing aerial firefighting capabilities and involves multiple military airlift wings.

The USDA Forest Service and CAL FIRE will host annual training for Modular Airborne Firefighting Systems (MAFFS) personnel from April 20-24, 2026, at McClellan Airtanker Base in Sacramento, California. The training will include participation from the California Air National Guard, Nevada Air National Guard, and the Air Force Reserve, utilizing C-130 Hercules aircraft equipped with MAFFS.
This session is designed to improve aerial firefighting efficacy and includes classroom instruction and operational exercises. Practice water drops will occur in the Tahoe National Forest, potentially affecting local residents and visitors. The MAFFS program enhances wildfire response capacity, particularly when commercial airtankers are unavailable.
