Ansonia Mayor Tyszka Proposes Budget with Potential Mill Rate Increase Amid Deficit Concerns

FUEL CELL

Ansonia Mayor Frank Tyszka indicated that his proposed budget may include a mill rate increase due to a projected deficit and reliance on past budget decisions made by former Mayor David Cassetti. Tyszka must submit the budget proposal to the Board of Apportionment and Taxation (BOAT) by February 9.

He criticized the previous administration's reliance on 'future revenue' and 'fuel cell revenue projections,' totaling approximately $6.5 million, which were funded by the city's sewer system sale. The current budget, adopted by a Republican-led Board of Aldermen, raised the mill rate from 26.49 to 28.55 mills. Tyszka is committed to maintaining specific expenditures for community events while addressing budget sustainability, as the city may need to hold a referendum if tax collections exceed a 3% increase, similar to past rejections of proposed budgets.
