Apache AH-64 Helicopter Successfully Tests New 30mm APEX Ammunition at Yuma Proving Ground
The Apache AH-64 helicopter achieved a milestone with the successful live fire test of the 30x113mm XM1225 APEX ammunition at Yuma Proving Ground. This marks the first air-to-air engagement using the new ammunition against unmanned aircraft systems. Developed by Product Manager Medium Caliber Ammunition at Picatinny Arsenal, the XM1225 is designed to enhance lethality against modern threats without modifications to existing systems. The test confirmed its effectiveness and accuracy, showcasing the Apache's advanced capabilities in combat.

The Apache AH-64 helicopter successfully tested the 30x113mm XM1225 Aviation Proximity Explosive (APEX) ammunition at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, in December 2025. This test demonstrated the Apache's first air-to-air engagement capability against unmanned aircraft systems.
The XM1225 APEX, managed by Product Manager Medium Caliber Ammunition from Picatinny Arsenal, is designed for modern threats without requiring system modifications. It met all accuracy requirements and showed effectiveness against ground and UAS targets.
The proximity fuze enhances its lethality, providing a significant tactical advantage. The collaboration among various Army units ensured the test's success, and the XM1225 is set for rapid fielding to support warfighters.
