Approval Granted for 460-MW Power Plant Near Rimbey by AUC
The Alberta Utilities Commission has approved TransAlta Corporation's 460 MW natural gas power plant near Rimbey. Construction is set to start in late 2027, with operations anticipated by 2030, aiming to supply power for up to 550,000 homes.

TransAlta Corporation's application for a 460-megawatt natural gas power plant near Rimbey has received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2027, with potential energization by 2030.
The power plant will connect to an existing gas pipeline and will include a new 240-volt transmission line. The facility is expected to supply energy for between 360,000 and 550,000 homes. Seven local landowners formed the Rimbey Protection Group, expressing concerns over property values and environmental impacts.
The AUC determined the selected site has lower overall impacts compared to an alternative proposed location. Water use plans are pending, with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas requiring further approvals. The project aligns with the Alberta Electric System Operator's assessment of regional needs.
