Approval Granted for Next-Gen Nuclear-Powered Cargo Ship Designs
Lloyd's Register and ABS have issued Approval in Principle for advanced nuclear cargo ship designs, emphasizing a shift towards cleaner maritime energy solutions. This marks a significant step in addressing the maritime industry's carbon emissions amid global regulatory pressures.

Lloyd's Register and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) have granted Approval in Principle for innovative nuclear-powered ship designs, focusing on advanced molten salt reactors. The approval process involves a comprehensive review ensuring compliance with international regulations, paving the way for engineering development and construction.
The design by Lloyd's Register involves a Pure Car and Truck Carrier developed by a South Korean consortium, while ABS has approved a design from MIT for integrating a nuclear reactor into a conventional cargo vessel. As the maritime industry faces pressure to reduce carbon emissions, these projects are aligned with the International Maritime Organization's targets for net-zero emissions by 2050, indicating a potential shift away from conventional fuels.
