Army Corps Secures $500,000 to Study Floodwall Extension for Norfolk's Southside Communities
DEFENSE
The Army Corps of Engineers will begin a study on extending a floodwall to Norfolk’s Southside, funded by $500,000 from a recent spending package signed by President Trump. This initiative responds to concerns from historically Black communities, including Campostella and Berkley, about being unprotected.
The floodwall is part of a $2.6 billion Coastal Storm Risk Management project and currently planned to extend 8 miles. The study, expected to take three years, will reassess cost-benefit analyses to include community factors alongside property values. If approved, further design and construction will follow.
