Assam Assembly Addresses Flood and Erosion Risks Amid Hydropower Projects
Rising concerns over floods and erosion in Assam have prompted government assurances for enhanced protection measures for affected communities. Legislative discussions highlighted the urgent need for improved infrastructure and coordination in flood management as the state grapples with the impact of hydropower releases.

During the Assam Legislative Assembly session, legislators expressed concerns regarding flood and riverbank erosion exacerbated by upstream hydropower projects. Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain confirmed that approximately Rs 101 crore has been allocated for flood mitigation and erosion control.
He stated that the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is not harmful under normal conditions but acknowledged increased risks during heavy rainfall. Coordination among Water Resources, Revenue departments, and local MLAs is essential for effective flood management.
New erosion-control initiatives worth Rs 13 crore are planned post-flood season, reflecting a commitment to address ongoing risks to downstream communities. The frequent erosion and flooding highlight the need for stronger infrastructures and timely alert systems.
