Assam's Hydrocarbon Resources: Over 50% Untapped, Says Petroleum Ministry
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reports that over 50% of Assam's hydrocarbon resources remain untapped, indicating significant potential for exploration. Joint Secretary Vinod Seshan noted that approximately 40% of resources have not been converted into reserves.
He emphasized the need for deeper exploration and the importance of monetizing new discoveries. Infrastructure development, particularly a gas pipeline network connecting all Northeastern states, is deemed critical.
Seshan also addressed gas flaring as a major loss for Assam, highlighting new regulations to penalize it. The Assam Session discussed contributions from key public sector undertakings including Oil India Limited and Numaligarh Refinery Limited, focusing on exploration opportunities and green initiatives. The Government of Assam is committed to creating an investor-friendly environment and enhancing collaboration with central agencies.
