ATMOS Space Cargo has completed a Series A funding round of €25.7 million aimed at establishing a European orbital return infrastructure. This investment will support the development of three PHOENIX-2 vehicles and the launch of ATMOS WORKS to cater to government and defense clients.

ATMOS Space Cargo has finalized a €25.7 million Series A funding round, which will facilitate the development of three PHOENIX-2 spacecraft and the establishment of ATMOS WORKS for governmental and defense applications. Led by Balnord and Expansion with participation from Keen Defence and Security, the financing also involves the European Innovation Council (EIC) through its Accelerator program.
Following a successful demonstration flight of PHOENIX 1 in April 2025, the company plans to move into regular operations with a structured campaign catering to both institutional and commercial users. The PHOENIX-2 spacecraft features an integrated propulsion and energy system, allowing for missions lasting from hours to months in low Earth orbit (LEO).
The vehicle's design includes an Inflatable Atmospheric Decelerator (IAD) to enable controlled re-entry and minimize environmental impact. The first recovery operations will take place near Santa Maria in the Azores, supported by a Portuguese license for commercial re-entry operations within the EU.
The development of PHOENIX 3 is underway, designed to handle payloads around ten times that of PHOENIX 2, addressing the growing needs of the European space industry. This initiative positions ATMOS as a critical player in establishing a sustainable and reliable European space infrastructure.
