Auckland Council Closes Staircases at Pacific Parade Due to Slip Risks
Access to staircases at Pacific Parade Coastal Reserve is restricted due to ongoing instability from 2023 storm damage. A decision on the future of the staircases will be made after evaluating repair or decommissioning options.

The Auckland Council has closed staircases at Pacific Parade Coastal Reserve, leading to Army Bay, due to risks from landslides that occurred after the 2023 storms. Both staircases are affected, with the eastern staircase experiencing significant failure.
The western staircase, renewed in March 2022, remains structurally intact but is closed for safety assessments. Council expects the closures to last at least six months while geotechnical evaluations and monitoring take place. A decision on whether to decommission or reinstate the affected staircases will be made by the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board after exploring options.
