Australia Develops Printable Solar Cells for Diverse Applications
Australian researchers have created lightweight solar cells capable of being printed on flexible plastic film, expanding solar technology applications. This innovation from CSIRO could significantly impact fields such as disaster relief, space missions, and wearable electronics.

CSIRO has developed printable perovskite solar cells utilizing a roll-to-roll printing process, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 15.5% for single cells in 2024. These cells, which can be produced at room temperature, eliminate the need for energy-intensive silicon manufacturing and replace costly metal electrodes with carbon-based inks, thus reducing costs.
The technology's flexibility allows integration into various environments, such as backpacks and satellites, and has been tested in space aboard Australia's Optimus-1 satellite. To facilitate commercialization, CSIRO established a AU$6.8 million photovoltaic facility in Melbourne, aiming to partner with industry stakeholders for scaling production.
