Australian Government to Sell Latchford Barracks in Victoria After 86 Years of Military Use

DEFENSE

The Australian federal government plans to sell Latchford Barracks in Bonegilla, North East Victoria, after 86 years of military and migrant use. Announced on February 4, 2023, the sale involves 64 defence sites identified in a recent audit.

Established in 1940 as Bonegilla Army Camp and later a migrant reception centre, Latchford Barracks transitioned to its current role in 1983. The 2.2-square-kilometre site currently accommodates 400-500 defence personnel and is set for relocation to other bases in the Albury-Wodonga area.

The Defence Department aims for the sale to be managed at market value, with proceeds reinvested in defence priorities. Local officials anticipate significant housing development potential for the site, pending changes to land zoning classifications by the Victorian government and Wodonga Council.
