Austria Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Coffee Roaster
Julius Meinl Kaffee has inaugurated Austria's first coffee roaster powered entirely by green hydrogen, producing CO2 savings of approximately 2 kg per 12 kg batch. This initiative reflects a significant step towards sustainable practices in the coffee industry and the broader market.

Julius Meinl Kaffee's new hydrogen coffee roaster in Ottakring processes 12 kg of green coffee per batch, utilizing 100% green hydrogen produced by Wien Energie. This innovative technology not only achieves the same roasting quality as conventional methods but also eliminates CO2 emissions, saving around 300 tons annually.
Wien Energie's hydrogen is sourced from renewable energies, including wind, solar, and hydropower, emphasizing the potential of green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels in various industrial processes. The introduction of hydrogen in coffee roasting aligns with a broader trend towards sustainability, with implications for other sectors, including public transport and construction. This project highlights the feasibility of integrating renewable energy solutions into traditional industries.
