Axpo Completes Italy's First LNG Bunkering for Cruise Ship in Naples
Axpo Italia has executed its inaugural liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering for the cruise ship Sun Princess at Naples port, marking a significant advancement in alternative fuel infrastructure. This operation is part of Italy's broader initiative to enhance LNG imports, which reached 20.6 billion cubic meters in 2025, positioning Italy as a key player in the EU's energy transition.

On May 24, 2026, Axpo Italia conducted the first LNG bunkering for the cruise ship Sun Princess in Naples, utilizing the Green Zeebrugge barge for the ship-to-ship transfer. This operation, involving cooperation with the Port Authority and other stakeholders, aligns with Italy's commitment to reducing maritime emissions and enhancing LNG infrastructure.
In 2025, Italy's LNG imports grew by 6 billion cubic meters to 20.6 billion, the second-largest increase in the EU after Belgium. The initiative supports the EU's FuelEU regulation aiming for an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050. The successful completion of this operation underscores the strategic importance of LNG in the decarbonization of maritime transport and positions Naples as a key hub in the energy transition.
