Azerbaijan's Absheron Phase 2 Development to Boost Gas Supply to Turkey by 2029

NATURAL GAS

Azerbaijan's Absheron Phase 2 development is set to commence production by late 2028 or early 2029, positioning Azerbaijan as a key gas supplier for Turkey. Turkey is transforming its energy sector to reduce dependence on Russian and Iranian gas, increasing imports from Azerbaijan instead.

Initial gas deliveries are expected in 2029, following ongoing negotiations. The Absheron gas field, discovered in the 1960s, holds significant reserves, and Phase 2 is projected to enhance production capacity.

TotalEnergies and ADNOC have joined the consortium, indicating strong international interest. The period 2028-2029 will be critical for Turkey’s energy balance, with U.S. LNG availability potentially altering price dynamics.

Existing Shah Deniz contracts may be revised in line with Turkey's shifting economic priorities. Despite challenges in financing, securing long-term buyers, and infrastructure needs, the Absheron project shows considerable potential. Azerbaijan's gas exports to Turkey are already substantial, suggesting a deepening geopolitical partnership.
