Barbados Signs Agreement with Denmark's Wavepiston for 50 MW Wave Energy Plant
Barbados has signed a landmark agreement with Denmark's Wavepiston to develop a 50 MW wave energy plant. The Project WEB will utilize a resilient system capable of withstanding severe Atlantic hurricanes while simultaneously generating electricity and desalinating seawater. Following a six-month feasibility study, the project has entered the implementation phase, with measurements confirming the suitability of Barbados' coastline for stable clean energy production. The initiative supports Barbados' commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.

Barbados has partnered with Denmark's Wavepiston to establish a 50 MW wave energy farm, named Project WEB, aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence. The project follows a feasibility study confirming the Atlantic coastline's capability for reliable clean energy.
The innovative Wavepiston technology features a dual-output hydraulic system that generates electricity and desalinated water. It is designed to withstand severe storms, addressing past failures of wave energy converters. This investment is pivotal for achieving Barbados' 2030 net-zero commitment and positions the island as a regional hub for wave energy expertise.
