Barcelona Deploys Dance Robots to Support Elderly Residents in Cognitive Decline
Irene Veglison, 67, received a dance robot named Sandi as part of a pilot project in Barcelona aimed at assisting elderly individuals experiencing cognitive decline. The initiative, supported by a €3.8 million EU recovery fund, has deployed 600 robots in homes and care centers. These robots, manufactured by Misty Robotics and distributed by Grup Saltó, are designed to improve teleassistance and detect emergencies. Spain faces a growing elderly population, with nearly 2 million seniors living alone, prompting a need for expanded long-term care workforce.

Barcelona has implemented a pilot project deploying 600 dance robots to assist elderly residents facing cognitive decline, including Irene Veglison, 67, who received her robot, Sandi, three months ago. Funded by a €3.8 million grant from the EU recovery fund, the project aims to enhance teleassistance and address the challenges of an aging population.
The robots, produced by Misty Robotics and distributed by Grup Saltó, can alert professionals in emergencies. With nearly 2 million seniors living alone in Spain, the workforce for long-term care is projected to need doubling by 2030, amid challenges such as low wages.
