Bavaria Sees Startup Boom with 785 New Companies in 2023, Driven by Defense Investment
Bavaria experienced a significant startup boom in 2023, with 785 new companies established, a 46% increase from the previous year, bringing the total to approximately 4,400 active startups. The Munich area dominates with over 2,400 startups.
The Bavarian Industry and Commerce Association (BIHK) reported that from 2023 to 2025, investments in Munich’s startups reached €6.4 billion, primarily due to growing interest in defense startups, which attracted €1.7 billion over three years. In contrast, traditional industries are losing around 2,000 jobs monthly. Factors contributing to the startup success include proximity to research institutions and supportive policies, although investor funding is significantly lower than in major US cities.
