BC Transit to Begin Electric Bus Infrastructure Construction at Kamloops Depot in January
BC Transit will start construction on electric bus infrastructure at its Kamloops depot in January 2024, with no expected impact on public service. This project is part of a broader electrification initiative affecting eight transit systems in British Columbia, including Kamloops, Kelowna, and Victoria.
BC Transit has ordered 125 heavy-duty electric buses for delivery in 2024, in addition to 15 already operating in Victoria. The electrification efforts are funded by $164 million from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, with support from local governments, as part of the Zero Emissions Transit Fund and the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
BC Transit aims to convert its entire fleet to electric buses by 2040, with current buses in Kamloops already utilizing compressed natural gas. The new electric buses will have a driving range of 250 to 400 km per charge and will require five to six hours of overnight charging.
