BDEW and Bundesnetzagentur Call for National Gas Reserve Amid Declining Storage Levels in Germany
The Bundesnetzagentur and the Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft (BDEW) have called for the establishment of a national strategic gas reserve in Germany due to critically low gas storage levels, currently at just over 30%. BDEW Chair Kerstin Andreae emphasized the need for a reliable buffer against external shocks.
This aligns with previous statements from Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur, who suggested the same last week. The Oldenburg energy supplier EWE also supports discussing additional crisis management tools, noting that other European countries like Austria, France, and Poland already maintain strategic gas reserves.
Current data shows a daily decline of about 1% in gas storage, raising concerns about potential supply shortages, particularly in extreme weather conditions. Critics argue that years of ideological decisions have led to this vulnerability. The situation underscores the need for Germany to reconsider its energy policy and explore all energy sources, including nuclear power and domestic gas reserves.
