Biden Activates Defense Production Act to Address Infant Formula Shortage
President Biden has activated the Defense Production Act to expedite infant formula production and facilitate imports. This measure aims to mitigate the ongoing domestic shortage resulting from the closure of a major manufacturing facility.

The Defense Production Act requires formula suppliers to prioritize orders from manufacturers, addressing production bottlenecks. Biden has authorized the Department of Defense to use commercial aircraft for transporting formula that meets U.S. standards, termed "Operation Fly Formula."
The formula shortage intensified after a February recall by Abbott Nutrition, which has since prompted the FDA to streamline import processes for foreign manufacturers. Abbott's Sturgis plant, closed due to contamination, may take 8-10 weeks to resume production once safety protocols are established.
Additionally, the House is set to vote on two bills, including one that would allow broader use of WIC vouchers and a $28 million funding increase for the FDA. However, some lawmakers question the effectiveness of increased FDA staffing versus production capabilities. The ongoing issues highlight the need for swift regulatory adjustments and production improvements to ensure adequate supply.
