Binaliw Landfill Collapse in Cebu City Results in Eight Confirmed Deaths
The collapse of the Binaliw landfill in Cebu City has resulted in eight confirmed deaths, with ongoing search efforts hampered by hazardous conditions, including foul odors and unstable debris. Many individuals remain missing, prompting the Philippine Army to assist local responders, while the incident has also disrupted the city's waste management system, delaying a new waste collection policy.

Rescuers have confirmed eight fatalities from the Binaliw landfill collapse in Cebu City, with ongoing search efforts amid hazardous conditions. As of January 11, recovery teams retrieved eight bodies, including two female victims.
Many individuals are still reported missing. The Philippine Army has deployed personnel to assist local responders, but safety risks have delayed the completion of search operations. Major hazards include foul odors, trapped methane gas, and unstable debris due to rainfall.
The psychological toll on rescuers is significant as they interact with grieving families. The incident has disrupted Cebu City's waste management system, leading officials to postpone the implementation of a new waste collection policy originally set for February 1. Cebu City collects approximately P100 million annually from garbage fees, which is significantly lower than its annual waste management costs of P550 million to P600 million.
