BMW Group Launches Physical AI Pilot Project with Humanoid Robots at Leipzig Plant
BMW Group is introducing Physical AI to Europe with a pilot project at its Leipzig plant, integrating humanoid robots into car production. Following a successful pilot in the U.S. at Spartanburg, the company aims to enhance production efficiency and explore applications in battery manufacturing. The initiative is supported by a unified IT and data model, facilitating the use of AI across production processes. The project, developed in collaboration with Hexagon Robotics, is expected to advance humanoid robotics in real-world conditions, with further testing planned for 2026.

BMW Group is advancing Physical AI in Europe through a pilot project at its Leipzig plant, focusing on the integration of humanoid robots into car production. This initiative follows a successful deployment of humanoid robots at the Spartanburg plant in the U.S. in 2025.
The Leipzig project aims to enhance production efficiency and explore applications in battery and component manufacturing. A unified IT and data model supports AI integration across BMW's production processes. Collaborating with Hexagon Robotics, the project includes initial tests for the humanoid robot AEON, with full pilot deployment anticipated in summer 2026.
