Bobcat Energy Center Receives Air Quality Approval from Iowa DNR

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved the Bobcat Energy Center project, confirming it will not adversely impact air quality or surrounding vegetation. This facility, to be located next to the Marshalltown Generating Station, will feature three natural gas combustion turbines aimed at meeting high demand electricity needs, with an operational limit of 3,500 hours annually per turbine.

The project underwent a thorough emissions review and extensive air dispersion modeling, concluding that it complies with national air quality standards. However, public interest appears low, as evidenced by only 20 attendees at the recent virtual hearing, prompting calls for better outreach regarding future public comments. The reception of the project might be influenced by public perception of air quality concerns, despite official reassurances from the DNR.
