Boeing B-52 Stratofortress Prototype Takes Flight
The YB-52, a prototype of the B-52 Stratofortress, made its first flight on April 15, 1952. The aircraft's significant range and payload capabilities established it as a cornerstone of U.S. military strategy.

The YB-52 Stratofortress prototype achieved its first flight on April 15, 1952, boasting eight engines and a wingspan of 185 feet. It has a range of over 5,000 miles and can carry up to 30 tons of conventional weapons, with aerial refueling extending mission lengths to 30 hours.
Between 1954 and 1962, Boeing produced more than 740 B-52s. Notably, the aircraft served as a deterrent during the Cold War, remaining aloft as a response mechanism to potential nuclear threats. Despite its age, the B-52 continues to be operational as of 2008, partially due to the shortcomings of other bombers like the B-1.
