Borkumlijn Celebrates 50 Years of Ferry Service Between Eemshaven and Borkum
AG Ems Nederland B.V. marked the 50th anniversary of the ferry service connecting Eemshaven and Borkum on May 8. This milestone highlights significant growth in maritime operations and cross-border collaboration between the Netherlands and Germany.
The ferry service from Eemshaven to Borkum commenced in the early 1970s, evolving from basic passenger transport to a modern terminal capable of handling both passengers and vehicles. Currently, approximately 40% of passengers and 60% of cars heading to Borkum are transported via this route.
The service operates up to six times daily, with the potential for eight during peak seasons, primarily serving travelers from North Rhine-Westphalia. The terminal, opened in Beatrixhaven in 2008, marked a significant upgrade in facilities, ensuring year-round operations since 1993.
Additionally, the fleet's sustainability improved with the introduction of LNG dual-fuel vessels. The Borkumlijn exemplifies successful international cooperation, pivotal for local tourism and the offshore sector, and continues to invest in future growth.
